It’s only been six months since Jussi Minkkinen joined Fumex as Production Manager, but despite the short time he’s been here, he already feels at home and is starting to see the impact of his work on the rest of the organization. In this interview, he tells us more about his first time here, his role as Production Manager and what makes Fumex so special.
Even though Jussi is new to Fumex, Fumex is far from new to him. Already in the second half of the 2000s, he took the step into Skellefteå’s growing industrial world, then as a self-employed powder coater. One of his customers was Fumex, for whom he painted filters.
– I have worked in industry in Skellefteå all my life, so of course I knew about Fumex and that it is a long-established company. However, I must admit that I was not aware that it is also a world-leading company in its niche. So I’m very excited to be part of the journey ahead, says Jussi.
Now that Jussi is starting as a Production Manager, he does so with both experience and knowledge behind him. He comes most recently from Northvolt, where he was the first Shift Manager at the second factory that was built. From being just an empty room, Jussi ensured that it was filled with machines, employees, and clear processes and working methods.
– I had a very instructive time at Northvolt. We worked extensively according to the LEAN method, streamlining workflows by standardizing the different work steps. It’s based on clear communication and constant knowledge transfer – it shouldn’t matter who performs a particular step, Jussi explains.

Continuous improvement and personal development have always been a driving force for Jussi. And although Fumex already has well-established structures and processes, he only sees opportunities to refine them further. At the same time, he is humble about the knowledge that exists within the company, and emphasizes the importance of involving employees in the continued development work.
– My six months are nothing compared to many of my colleagues. They know Fumex inside out, and if I listen to their thoughts and understand their reality, together we can find improvement in both big and small ways. At the end of the day, it’s about the team, and how we can make everyone’s job a little better one day at a time.
But despite only six months into his employment, Jussi already feels at home at Fumex, where a family atmosphere and high standards are the hallmarks of the culture.
– I have gotten a very positive impression of Fumex, so much that it actually feels like a second home. We stand up for each other and show appreciation when someone has done something good. Then, of course, we have several other benefits, and the company genuinely cares about its employees, which also significantly contributes to the culture, Jussi explains.

Since 1975, Fumex has been at the forefront of global innovation in workplace air quality – developing fume extractors, fans, and filters for laboratories and industrial environments. Staying close to the customer’s everyday reality has always been a cornerstone of Fumex’s approach of customer-near innovation.
We are now introducing a brand-new LED lamp for three of our most popular extraction arms, designed for industrial and laboratory use: Fumex PR, PRX, and ME. The flexible LED lamp will help simplify work for operators performing a wide variety of high-precision tasks.
The LED lamp attaches to the outside of the extraction arm and features adjustable positioning and dimmable lighting. It comes with a built-in push button with an LED indicator for controlling the fan and/or damper. Including cable routing. Power supply via a separate transformer or control unit.
With the product launch, all previous lamps in our range will be discontinued.
The LED lamp will be on display during the upcoming trade fairs later this fall.
In the midst of the move to our new headquarters in Skellefteå, Fredric Holmström stepped into the role of Production Manager. Despite a hectic first period, which included helping to plan the move, Fredric quickly settled into his role at Fumex. Now begins the work of fine-tuning the production and delivery chain.
As a former football player and now a coach, competition, development, and teamwork have been a constant theme throughout Fredric’s life. The same goes for his career, where he has steadily advanced through various leadership roles in workshops, service, and the energy sector. When he was introduced to Fumex in the second half of 2024, he showed immediate interest.
– It feels great to be here at Fumex. What attracted me most was the flat organizational structure, which allows for considerable influence over the business. And then there’s the great team spirit and the warm, family-like atmosphere, says Fredric.
As Production Manager, Fredric is responsible for refining the production and delivery processes and supporting his colleagues in their day-to-day work. He plays a key role in ensuring smooth collaboration between various internal roles and departments, as well as with suppliers.
– I enjoy working as part of a team and coaching both groups and individuals to grow. At Fumex, we have a very solid foundation to build on, so a lot of it is about finding the small adjustments in our daily routines that can elevate us to the next level.

Fredric describes team spirit as one of the key reasons for Fumex’s success. Employees always step up – not just for one another, but also for their customers.
– We have a strong sense of teamwork, great flexibility, and a sharp customer focus. Our goal is always to deliver on time and with high quality, preferably a bit better than promised. With that in mind, it’s also important to strike a balance where we can unwind outside of work.
With the construction of Fumex’s new headquarters, employee well-being has been brought even more into focus.
– At Fumex, it’s important that our employees feel good, both in terms of the work environment and the benefits we offer. We’ve dedicated spaces for spa and gym facilities, and we regularly organize competitions and team events. In short, we have a lot of fun together!
Back in March, the FUMEX PSS extraction arm was featured in an article in the official magazine for the PharmaCongress 2025. It is one of Europe’s leading expos for the pharmaceutical industry, held annually in Wiesbaden, Germany. The article, written by Maren Schlichting, describes the challenges and possible solutions in the protection of sensitive products and handling of hazardous substances in filling and distribution centers. Here is a summary of the article.
In the pharmaceutical industry, all ingredients must be of high quality to ensure the final products are safe and work well. By taking samples from the incoming substances, companies can check that everything meets the standard, and protective measures help prevent contamination and keep the products safe in the process.
The withdrawal of samples must meet requirements on employee protection and product protection requirements according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). Whereas product protection refers to sterile working environments and avoiding cross-contamination, risk assessments define employee protection measures.
Furthermore, the PharmaCongress 2025 article elaborates on the principle of the STOP-hierarchy. It defines four levels of protective measures and specifies a ranking for the selection.
S – Substitution
T – Technical protective measures
O – Organizational protective measures
P – Personal protective measures
In manual sampling, where substitution is excluded, the technical protective measures are essential to minimize employee exposure to hazardous substances and ensure product protection. For pharmaceutical industries, closed or extraction systems are often the solution.
Depending on the process requirements, various technical protective measures can also be combined, such as laminar air flow technology combined with extraction arms. In contrast, the first provides a controlled environment, and the extraction arm captures hazardous substances directly at the source. This combination is particularly suitable for processes with high demands on hygiene and hazardous substance protection.
Stainless steel, antistatic plastics, and chemical-resistant materials usually offer the best properties to meet the high safety requirements, hygiene, and ease of maintenance requirements.
We were delighted to see our PSS acknowledged in this in-depth article about protective measures for the pharmaceutical industry – and also, in a facility designed by the environmental safety company Denios.
FUMEX PSS is made for applications and environments with high hygiene and safety requirements. During product development, we combined our expertise in air extraction with a focus on appropriate material and minimizing the number of components.
Today, the FUMEX PSS extraction arm is the only extraction arm on the market that is cleanroom certified while meeting ATEX and ‘food grade’ requirements.

In industries and environments with high sanitary standards, such as pharmaceutical-, food processing-, or cleanroom applications, it is necessary to minimize the potential for bacterial growth and cross-contamination. Products used in daily operations, such as extraction arms, need a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that is resistant to different substances and acids.
In order to meet sanitary requirements and demands set by authorities, companies often choose products that are made of stainless steel. This is due to its corrosion resistance and durability, but not least, the ease of cleaning, a characteristic of products with a low Ra-value.
The roughness of the surface is essentially what Ra-value refers to. “Ra” stands for the arithmetic average roughness, which is a measure of the deviations from a true plane surface. A lower Ra-value indicates a smoother surface, and a higher value indicates a rougher one.

One may think that the lower the Ra-value, the better, but this is false. In reality, the best conditions for sterilizing and cleaning are achieved when the Ra-value of the surface is between 0.25 and 0.60 µm. It is, in short, the sweet spot.
Fumex PSS is one of our extraction arms in stainless steel, and it has a Ra-value of ≤ 0.6. With such a smooth surface, it becomes easy to clean the arm, as well as maintain a safe and sterile environment where neither dirt nor toxins can be found. The PSS is also the first extraction arm on the market with a hermetically sealed profile, making it even easier to keep clean.

The extraction arm is also equipped with our quick connection system FUMEX Q-MaiD™, which makes it easy to disconnect the hose, to be able to sterilize and clean the supporting parts and hood of the extraction arm, as well as the hose.
